This is a bottle of Paregoric. Paregoric is a medication that contains morphine which is the most active substance found in opium. It is addictive. It's uses include control of diarrhea, expectorant and cough medicine, and even rubbing on baby's gums to counteract the pain of teething. It has been a widely used product since the 18th century and easily available over the counter. In the twentieth century it was labeled as an exempt narcotic, and subsequently it could only be bought over the counter in smaller amounts with the buyer having to register upon purchase. It is no longer available in the United States.
