From the 50's,....I guess my fave, though there are a few, would have to be Twilight Zone.
In the 60's, I LOVED UltraMan, when I was a kid, and Star Trek.
In the 70's, I also liked Space:1999 ( I would say Night Gallery and Kolchak, but I guess they are more "Horror" than sc-fi.)..and Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea re-runs....heh...
Can't think of much beyond that, I was always more into horror and ghost stories than sci-fi,...
For variety of Plots and also longevity My NUMBER ONE PICK has to be "STARGATE SG-1" !It kept morphing and adding characters--without changing the core of what made it enjoyable--and the leader (for 8 of the years) Colonel (Now General) JACK was Always a welcome change from the overly serious and oh--so--politically correct leaders of so many similar shows! If someone was presenting a great danger--Jack would often say--"Why don't we just shoot 'im?" LOL (sometimes serious--sometimes kidding--depending on the nature of the crisis! (Also--SG-1 holds the ALL TIME Record for longevity of a Sci-Fi Series--and is in the runing for longevity of a fiction series--period!)
The next 2 were Neck and neck in my consideration--but "ENTERPRISE" won out! First of all "grandfathering in" a series behind FOUR prior Star Trek Series is an accomplishment in itself!
Secondly, of all the series that had multiple alien races in its various stories--Enterprise had probably the most--and the ones that were concocted specifically FOR that version of TREK were the most inventive (I especially liked the water based life form and the insectoid)--also--the series did a laudable job of featuring plots that centered around practically EVERY crew member that was more than a cameo or plot device! Finally--the ending episode was extremely interesting and the idea of using the COOK-- who was often mentioned but never seen (until then--and in the strictest sense not EVEN THEN!)as the nexus around which the final days of the "Enterprise" Experimental's story was told --and portrayed by a character from Star Trek Next Generation (its too complicated to explain here--see the episode)--the famous Will Riker was fantastic! Oh--and before I forget--I also LOVED that THIS series unlike ANY I can think of in the Sci-Fi world (except the 4400) had A Theme SONG--NOT a pretentious neo-classical overblown orchestra piece!
I may elucidate on my other choies at some point--but I'm a bit tired--so here they are in order of rank by name only.
3. "BABYLON 5" (produced by Warner Brothers)
4. Twilight Zone// 5. SEVEN DAYS (UPN 1999)--a secret NSA Project can send a man back in time just one week to avert disasters that have already happened.
6. Star Trek Voyager (produced by Paramount)
7.Star Trek Next Generation
8.Cop (appeared on ABC in the 90's--short lived but fun and never got a real chance)
9. Star Trek DS-9
11.The Outer Limits
12. Dr. Who (BBC)
13. TORCHWOOD (a new series from the BBC with top quality production values not associated with earlier BBC Sci_FI)--if I make this list again--I suspect it will be rated much higher.
1. Farscape - A must see
2. Highlander - more of a fantasy but living forever I think qualifies
3. The 4400 - follows in the footsteps & expands on Taken
4. Eureka - Hilarity - Sci-Fi at its best (IMO)
5. Star Trek: Voyager - Love all Star Trek but Voyager tops my list
6. Sliders - 90's Sci-Fi with ooohhh Wormholes ... Pre the Gate of course
7. SG-1 - yes this one actually fluctuates up & down in my list
8. The Dresden Files - short lived based on the novels of Jim Butcher
I'm sure I can think of others, and several have been mentioned here already like Quantum Leap, Twilight Zone, Outer Limits (wait has this one been mentioned yet or is it more horror/thriller)
Thanks for the Netflix links, JW. I loved all you mentioned except Farscape. I don't know why I never got into the series. Strange characters, maybe? The 4400 ended w-a-a-a-y-y-y too early for me! I have all of them on DVR and will keep them. Eureka is in my queue to test, and from you list I just added The Dresden Files.
Captain, I felt about Babalon 5 the same as Farscape. Just couldn't get into the characters. I have Torchwood disc 1 in my queue and will let ya know.
Never heard of Cop, and couldn't find it online. The same with Seven Days.
Of course "Cop"--was meant to be "TIMECOP"--but I am bad about reviewing my entries! Babylon 5 was special--in that almost ALL of the scripts were written by its developer (Michael Strazynski) to cover a broad "EPIC" tale that unfolded more each season--the weakness of such a show--is that although many of the episodes stand reasonably well on their own--faithful watching of each episodes (which is often tough to do--guess that makes DVD viewing a better alternative) reveals nuances not clear to the occasional viewer! DRESDEN Files is a great show--and is available for free viewing on www.fancast.com
if you have dsl or some sort of broadband!

All the stuff I watch on network television is free. The thing is I don't do commercials. Everything I watch is recorded with all commercials removed. I do have broadband but only really use it for computer work and ROKU. I find It's too uncomfortable to watch episodes from my computer chair. I do have Hulu marked as a fave, and if I'm ever looking for a show for my game pieces, I will check out fancast to see it they have available, so thanks for the link.
Voyagers! and Quantum Leap are the best for Time Travel buffs.
Twilight Zone

For funny stuff, My Favorite Martian
