What TV Shows did you grow up with?

If you go all the way back to the 50's, you see that women were mostly housewives, if they got a show of their own to begin with. I think Annie Oakley was the exception to the rule. The Sixties were not much different, but in the 70's we at least started seeing some shows like Police Woman, Wonder Woman and a ground breaking show like Alice - where a woman was divorced and raising a kid on her own.

Come the 80's though, we got Cagney & Lacy, women in war like on China Beach, Murder, She Wrote and a plethora of Sit-Coms showing not just young women (Golden Girls) Kate & Allie, Roseanne, in work mode, raising families.

The 90's started showing women in much more powerful positions but it wasn't until the new millennium that we got Dark Angel! She was synthetically enhanced but she still beat the crap outta men, and that was something very new!

What are your favorite POWERFUL women, and why?

I love Saving Grace! I've only seen bits and pieces of a few eps, but I really loved Holly, Laura San Giacomo, and the actress that played the Unsinkable Molly Brown in Titanic. There are a lot of strong women heading up tv shows in this decade too. :)

And why the hell did they have to cancel "Damages"?

Nah I like what's happening with the women in Army Wives, The closer, Hawthorne, Medium, Ghost Whisperer, heck even in 7th Heaven, who was running that family? Takes all kinds.

Loved Sharon Gless, even now in Burn Notice, she's awesome and what a cool cool lady to work with. I just love her to bits. She was so cool around my mom who got rather stage struck around her. It was pretty funny, but Sharon was a class act.

Little show on USA Sundays-In Plain Sight--Saving Grace with Brains. Mary McCormack is terrific Don't forget Maude ladies, the original women's libber, Bonnie Franklin in One Day..single mom like Alice with TWO kids, and one was Mackenzie Phillips!!! Julia Louis Dreyfusss currently fronts an independent woman show. Evidently Julianna Margulies is going to try another lawyer show next season, and one show that got cancelled much too soon a couple years ago --Karen Sisco-female ass kicker extraordinaire. Dirt got better, then got cancelled. Courtney trying again in Cougarland-The title speaks for itself.

I like "In Plain Sight" a lot and record it weekly along with Saving Grace. Maude was the greatest. I like Julia Louise Dreyfuss on Seinfeld but never got into her sit-coms. Good news that Julianna Margulies is coming back, but hope she gets picked up by a network other than FOX, who puts shows on the chopping block way too fast for me. One you didn't mention was Damages, and I loved Glenn Close as Patty Hewes. I missed the opening of the show this year, however, and intend to rent it once released.

A couple of the women mention Close on Damages earlier. She, along with CCH Pounder were also good, strong women on the Shield

Yep, I missed Juli's comment about Close, but knew she liked the show. CCH Pounder is a great example and Whoopie too, in movies.
